Throughout the world, nature is being alarmingly impacted by man-made emissions, spillage and effluent, two of the most obvious effects being climate change and acid rain. It would be wonderful if we could continue to exist on this amazing planet without destroying it in the process. How wonderful it would be if we could breathe natural air in our cities, uncontaminated by poisons and toxins due to our way of living. Regrettably pollution caused by us humans has made this not possible; in fact you’ll be breathing in toxic fumes that can have undesirable effects on your health as well as the environment.
All forms of life found in that huge body of water, our oceans, which make up 70% of planet earth’s surface, are being ravaged by pollutants such as oil and chemical spillage, which inevitably affects us as well. For many people who made a living from the sea by fishing they no longer have a job because of pollution. Communities have counted on fishing for generations, for both food and economic prospects, and now all of this is coming to an end for many. A big example of how we are destroying the ocean is with oil spills, a recent example of this is the Deepwater Horizon spill which left many people jobless and cost billions of dollars to put right. The food chain together with the whole of the ecosystem sustained serious damage, as a direct consequence of the deaths of large numbers of not only fish but also birds. All of this just to obtain oil, a great instance of humans putting themselves before other creatures and the planet.
In contrast to investing in present green energy methodologies and further research into innovative possibilities, we persist in spending billions of dollars on oil exploration. Green energy has absolutely no impact on the environment and can still supply a lot of energy for people. Take solar panels for instance, they will work effectively in sunlit locations and they can produce electricity as well as heat up water. And something that’s every bit as simple in concept, wind turbines, employs another free resource (wind) to make energy. The positive side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, assuming there is enough wind. Oil is destroying our planet and it will ultimately run out, so it’s important to invest in green energy production now more than ever. If we did that, global warming along with the other ruinous results of pollution could very well be stopped, and just possibly reversed.
Numerous short term advantages will accrue to us, and we’ll be providing future generations many benefits. We desire for our children to grow up surrounded by all the beauty the planet is endowed with, happy and without fear of violent, distressing weather events and food shortages. Beginning to live green, and looking after the environment, could be the only way we can ensure this.
It will be worth all the money, time and huge effort needed, if we can stop the unyielding march of the harm we are doing to our planet.
